Taikyoku Shodan

A kata of unclear origin. Considered as a training method and not kata by the JKA. Re-introduced into the "Shotokan Karate-do International" to examine basic techniques for high grade or skills test. Basic problems here will most likely be evident in all the karateka's katas.

Problem Areas

A slight to a pronounce forward lean.

Most typical, heels not flat on the floor. Both heels should be in contact with the floor. Care should also be given in not gripping with the toes, that is, the whole surface of boot feet should be resting squarely on the floor.

Again, most typical, front foot pointed outward to the direction of motion from a front stance. The foot should either be in line with the direction of motion or ever so slightly inward. Rear foot should relatively be parallel (about 15 degrees) with the front.
